Alan L. Ellis, Ph.D.
Alan Ellis conducts mitigation work for death-eligible defendants and
others facing major felonies. He is an independent contractor for
the Maricopa County Office of Public Defense Services, the Pima

County Office of Contract Counsel and also contracts with other
Arizona counties and private attorneys.

Alan is fluent in Spanish and has conducted mitigation-related
interviews and research throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico
and Central America. He works collaboratively with the Department
of Protection of the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix and the Mexican
Capital Litigation Assistance Project (MCLAP), which is funded by the
Mexican Parliament.

Alan holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of
Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. He has been a member of the faculty
at the University of Kentucky and San Francisco State University,
where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in social
psychology, conflict and conflict resolution, small group behavior,
survey research methods, and other topics. He has also published
books, chapters, and articles in the field of social psychology and
human sexuality.

In addition to his academic endeavors, Alan worked in the
non-profit sector providing psycho-social support services to
individuals facing life-challenging illnesses, and with refugees and
others displaced by war. He served as Acting Executive Director and
Associate Director of the Center for Attitudinal Healing in Sausalito,
California and helped develop centers in Zagreb, Croatia, and
Moscow, Russia. He also conducted training sessions throughout the
United States and Mexico.
